Derinkuyu underground city, Nev?ehir, Turkey
As the name suggests, this amazing multi-leveled city is built underground in the region of Cappadocia, Turkey. Well, the Cappadocia region is well-known for its beautiful and numerous underground cities.
The largest underground city in Cappadocia, Derinkuyu, was discovered in 1965s when an inhabitant of this region cleaned one of the rooms of his house.
But, it was not an ordinary house, but one of the most traditional cave-type houses that are ubiquitous in this region and are highly sought out by tourists today.
So, it all started when the man wanted to do repairs to a wall and uncovered something strange, revealing that behind the walls was hidden in an unknown room. It just got crazier from there as this room was connected to another, then another, opening out to a maze of rooms that were bigger than anyone could imagine.
Archaeologists would discover that behind the wall lay a breathtaking underground city, with at least 18 floors underground to a depth of about 85 meters, and could accommodate about 30,000 people (including livestock). Indeed, specialists have not fully explored the underground city of Derinkuyu even today.
