The domed roof, canvas-covered, circular yurts called gers that Mongolians have lived in for millennia remain a central part of their cultural identity. Although the gers lack internal heat, proper sewage, or access to clean drinking water, the mobile huts tie Mongolians to their herder roots.
And even as the country becomes more financially prosperous, many citizens are choosing to forgo fancy highrises for their comfortable and traditional family homes.
