French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana
When immigrant workers began moving to New Orleans in huge numbers during the early 1800s, they brought with them a new style of home: the shotgun house.
Small and affordable, these houses have distinct features including being slightly raised off the ground (to protect them from hurricane damage).
While not as instantly recognizable as the plantation homes in the Garden District, Shotgun houses have been experiencing a resurgence in popularity following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
